Subject: Update and Revision of ASME Y14.18
We understand that ASME/ANSI Y14.18M is being balloted for possible
withdrawal. OEOSC believes this standard still has value to the US
optics community, and would like to offer assistance for the updating
and perpetuation of this standard. We would like to discuss the
possibilities of either forming a joint working group for this purpose,
or transferring Y14.18 to OEOSC.
OEOSC, the Optics and Electro-Optics Standards Council, was formed in
1994 by SPIE, OSA, APOMA, NAPM, and EK. The objectives of OEOSC are: (1)
to provide a unified, coherent voice for the U.S. optics and
electro-optics industry in establishing, maintaining, and advancing U.S.
and international optics and electro-optics standards; (2) to facilitate
the development of U.S. standards as administered by the ANSI "OP"
Committee and by TC172 of ISO for the benefit of the U.S. optics and
electro-optics industry.
OEOSC administers the U.S. TAG to TC172, and as such, has an interest in
the ISO optics drafting standard ISO 10110. We believe there is interest
in the U.S. optics community in maintaining an alternative to ISO 10110,
and feel that a modernization of Y14.18 with a Y14.5 base would serve
this purpose. Would you please contact us to discuss this possibility?
